Mr Kora

It was a calm day in clinic today. Too calm for a Monday. Calm is good.

Calm clinic means I get to spend more time with certain patients especially those who needs a tad more advice and guidance in managing their chronic disease. It’s also a good time to just listen to those grandmother stories that are usually cut off (with style and grace) during other busy clinic sessions. As of today, I get to listen to Mr Kora’s story.

Mr Kora was a 63 years old Indian gentlemen with underlying diabetes. He is working as a security guard including night shifts on a monthly wage of RM1600. He came to clinic today with back pain. Understandably, the night hours for such an elderly man can be detrimental to one’s health especially when he has been in this line of job for the past 5 years. I mean, how could you not doze off once in a while, in an awkward position during your shift. Even doctors need to rest for a bit before continuing with their work. And yet, he said working the night shift is his choice as he needs his daytime to be free so that he could attend to matters pertaining to his wife and children like sending to clinic or school, grocery run and all.

I ordered him an an Xray, discharged him with pain killers and gave him a medical certificate to rest for 2 days. Whilst writing his prescription, I asked about his family, I enquired if he has applied for BPN and all. He was not sure if he had applied for BPN, so we checked his MyKad number and his wife’s MyKad number. His family after all is eligible for the B40 category. Alhamdulilah, the wife’s name is in the system and they should be receiving the financial benefits soon.

Throughout the session, he never stopped mentioning how glad he is for getting the job and his supportive immediate boss, how happy he is for his children and how, even at the receiving end of benefits, he still gives a bit of ‘charity’ to other people in his area.

What struck to me most afterwards was when he told me a story about KFC.

One day, he and his son received an SMS promo on their phones saying there is a KFC voucher you can claim to get a BUY ONE FREE ONE meal. Naturally, they were very excited with the deal and started to fill in sensitive data as required. Unbeknownst to Mr Kora at the time, it was of course, a scam.

Thankfully, due to his keen eye, he realized that the little money he deposited into his bank account were missing periodically. Sometimes it is RM40, others it is RM20. So he visit the bank and thus discovered that his bank account had been hacked. The bankers were really helpful though and reassured him that they will try to get his money back. At the same time, they created a new bank account for him. In total, about RM100 were taken from his account illegally. For a man who earns less than RM2K per month and having mouths to feed on top of bills and a car to pay, it is a significant amount.

What happened next was a moment of WOW.

  1. He was upset that the criminals took his money for he felt that the RM100 could be used to help the people he usually helps.
  2. He was concerned of those who have more money in their accounts being scammed the same way like he did. His words, I translate, being “what if that person had thousands of money, they could have taken more. Poor guy! (kesian)

There I was thinking – such an awful thing has happened to this uncle and yet he could still think of other people. In this very modern, self-absorbed and sometimes, self-centered world – it is very difficult to come across someone like Mr Kora, who being the one in despair is still concerned about the wellbeing of others. Nowadays, if the rich gets in trouble, rarely people get empathetic. Orang pandai bisnes kan, takkan takde geng yang boleh tolong. When the parent of a doctor is admitted to ICU in a foreign country during a holiday trip, you can be sure that the donation drive would be less energetic. Doktor kan kaya, takkan takde duit langsung.

Mr Kora may not have met Syed Azmi, I wouldn’t know. But it seems that they live their lives based on the wisdom of “helping those in NEED”. A person may have mansion but if what they NEED right now is RM10 for a hot meal because they have no cash at all (accounts got beku or something) then we will give it to them. A person may not be illiterate but if what the person NEEDS right now is a pencil and a book, we will give it to them.

A person IN NEED doesn’t have to look shabby, smelly or poor. It can be anybody, a person with their own pressing, special needs. Mr Kora understood that virtue in life which is why even when he have so little, he still thinks about those who have more.

September Birthday Party

We didn’t really get to do a big celebration (Peringkat Jenjarom) for my birthday in August due to my semester exams. So we went for Hi Tea instead last weekend to lump in both August & September babies celebration.

Checked in Putrajaya Marriot Hotel

I wanted to splurge and pamper myself. So I booked a room at this 5 star hotel with free breakfast for two. It had the usual amenities expected from this high end abode . There’s FREE WIFI, complimentary beverages, good entertainment, luxurious looking toileteries, a bathtub, a Super King bed, a sofa (fit for Ee) and a beautiful view. The receptionist was super helpful too. Said he was from Batu Berendam.

Price per night from it’s own website : RM225/night.

It was a very big room. After the husband and kids retired to bed, I soaked myself in the tub using the Doterra Spa Bodywash. I even put on Spotify in the bathroom for ambience. I enjoyed the view and the late night brew.

The next morning we had breakfast at The Zest, the house restaurant. Ee’s rate was originally RM28 ( children) but being the house guest, he had a 30% discount. Hence, I spent only RM19.80 for his breakfast and it was a buffet! The spread was wonderful and tasty although husband said there was something wrong with the pastries that morning. A bit hard he said.

I wish I had more days off to just enjoy the hotel facilities and cafes. Alas, I have other matters to attend to. We checked out at 11 am the next day and I bought the birthday cake from Marriot’s in house cafe – The Oracle. It was an RM88 Orange Chocolate mousse cake yang tak sedap. So, jangan beli. Ha ha ha.

Hi Tea at Movenpick Hotel

Movenpick sounds very English. Hakikatnya, it is hotel tabung haji yang posh. We had a reservation for the Birthday Hi Tea at Temasya Restaurant. Although the selections were not huge, the readily available options were delicious enough. The Hi-Tea was served buffet style. Husband loved the Beriani. I loved the spaghetti, lamb, satay and well, almost everything.

Except maybe the desserts. Ada lain macam skit rasa jelly dia.

My sister, Nora and youngest brother, Matin enlisted the help of Shuke2 Planner to decorate our table. They also coordinated with the staff of Temasya Restaurant to sing the Happy Birthday song to my dad. What I did not expect was that I received a surprise chocolate bouquet as well! I was so not camera-ready as I did not have any makeup on and that my tudung is so kedut2. Damn those surprises.. although I secretly loved it.

Nora gave me a set of Mary Kay Hand Care set which I absolutely loved. It’s quite a routine just for your hands but I love the fragrance. I also received my backdated order of my MK feet lotion which emanates this minty sensation to it. My brothers gave me a chocolate bouquet and my mom gifted me a set of telekung with purple sejadah. Dad paid for the hi-tea. Ha ha ha.

The celebration does not end there as there are a few social engagements coming up. Lol.

  • November : Tok Teb, Matin & Ninie birthdays
  • December : Ee & Adils’ birthday, my 10th year wedding anniversary, KIV gender reveal party by Aunty L (Nora).

Until then, let’s doa for good health, good life and a world of happiness.

Much needed break

I needed the break to fully realign my life. So I requested for Cuti Rehat from my superior which was thankfully granted. I even made a list of what I wanted to do during the break. I have spent 2 of the days and this was what I did.

Massage at SinggahSiniSpa

It is really hard to find a good masseuse. One who knows how much pressure to put on your body. To be honest, I really liked the ones I have overseas. The pressure is just nice, perhaps as they have more experience massaging Western tourists. Local masseuse tend to press on your body too much despite you telling them to ease it.

At SSS, it was not too bad although I did came back a bit sore at certain parts of my body. As a start, I loved the place. It was very aesthetic, smells nice and the music they played on the screen made it so serene and relaxing. The place looked exclusive!

I did the full body massage for 45 minutes priced at RM80. I knew I was in for a good session from the beginning. The lady massaged my heels and the pressure was so on point, I felt so relaxed right away. She even gave me an effective ‘crunchy’ sound down my spine as she pressed down on it gently. That was when I knew I’d probably slouched too much while sitting down.

Wash & Cut at Heritage Hair Salon

A new semester calls for a new beginning. Hence, the hair cut. Plus, I wanted a scalp and shoulder massage badly. This time I went to their new branch at Lorong Pandan. It was a small and dainty place. There were no customers whilst I was there and so I had like an hour session of cutting and washing my hair. I could tell that the young lady was less experienced than the owner herself cause in the hands of the original lady owner, your head feels so free and light that you’d feel so smart. LOL.

I cut off my long locks of hair and now I look like an aging Rogue (X-Men) with a streak of grey hair at the front. Kinda cool, actually. The trip to the salon costs me only RM35.

Other activities

Incidentally, I found a nearby nursery that sells the Vonya soil and it only costs me RM6 per bag. I bought two. Since parking is easy, I would most likely get my soil supply there in the future.

I did my groceries in Tesco. I had a wonderful cashier. She scanned my items nicely at a considerable pace and did not disrupt the arrangements of my goods. I was such in a good mood spending grocery money that I decided to get cat food for the stray cat that checks in once in while under my gazebo. I am desperate to give that cat a bath.

I treated myself to breakfast at a kopitiam and had a hearty breakfast. White coffee, nasi lemak, 2 half boiled eggs and a single Kaya/Butter toast. Very huge appetite! For moi !

Then, at home I rearranged the bookshelves and exercise equipment. I couldn’t help bragging to my husband that I could move the machine. All it needed was sheer will and incredible strength. I am in the middle of doing a make over of my personal study into a mini library for the family. I think it’s good influence for the kids.

I am anticipating a lively weekend too. We will be celebrating birthdays! Hooray..
