Langkawi 2017 : Hotel Bahagia

The hotel provides service as good as its name. You do feel bahagia. Located in the heart of Pekan Kuah, it is appealing to tourists who have ‘shopping at Haji Ismail Group HIG MALL’ as part of their itinerary. It is a 25mins drive from the airport. The room rate at Hotel Bahagia starts at RM99 per night for a standard room. However, the more financially apt guests may prefer the Suites and Studios.

Hotel Bahagia also has a ‘cousin’ – Villa Bahagia which is a different form of accommodation suitable for families and groups of friends situated a few miles away.

We were in Langkawi for 4D3N and we booked our package through the Malindo Air website. The total cost for our trip –  2 adults and 1 kindie kid was just above RM700.00 (return flight ticket + hotel room)

Pros;

  1. Location is strategic to Pekan Kuah where all the shopping goes on – especially to locals who go there to find tax-free Luminarc, Corell and what not.
  2. Room has basic amenities like a kettle, hot shower, towels and hairdryer. Only, the lower room rates would lack a window. So you should just stare at your husbands eyes and see through the window of his soul or something.
  3. Breakfast is included in our hotel room rate and the menu is I felt, befitting to what we pay for. They also have a cafe next door, a convenience store with bakery and did I mention there’s a Thai Restaurant just down the block? Yup, all in one row.
  4. There’s an agency that provides island hopping packages and other island activites at the lobby. So it was very convenient for us. Price was negotiable and just like, in Krabi, they pick you up at the hotel with a transport to the jetty.
  5. FREE WIFI in every room

Cons;

  1. You need parking coupons to park at the hotel. They do not have a specific car park. You’d need to park in front of the shop lots. Thankfully, there are plenty of shops selling the coupons. Too bad the reception does not sell them.
  2. Housekeeping can be a bit sloppy. On one day they left their scrubbing towel in the toilet. The next day they forget to empty the trash – I mean they did remove the plastic bag from the bin but they forgot to bring it with them. When we arrived, they did not stock up the toiletries with shower foams. This however, could be an isolated incident so it’s OK.
  3. The coffee could taste better. It was agonizing.
  4. While its nice to have FREE WIFI – you need to get a new username & password everyday from the reception.

At the end of the day, the good points won us over and it was overall a wonderful stay. We would probably pay for maybe a deluxe or Junior suite room for our next visit if we still choose to stay there. Heard there’s a massage chair in the latter room.

Excellent location.

Worth the money.

Clean facilities.

Overnight Oat Breakfast

Sometimes the best meals are not those which are made  from expensive ingredients. But almost always one that is made out of pure love, effort and conscience. And food stuff of course!

Oat
Fruits
Milk
Bits of coco crunch/sweet cereal

All tossed in the Tupperware and left to stand with cold milk poured into it in the fridge overnight. The oat bathes in the milk and voila! a wonderful breakfast to start the morning.

Medan 2014 : Food-tourism on a budget

I daresay eating or makan-makan in Indonesia as a tourist is affordable and clean at most places. We are able to have our meals at decent air-conditioned restaurants with a price tag way cheaper than in Malaysia. Imagine a meal set for two in a fast food chain, TEXAS CHICKEN for instance, only costs us MYR 12.

And our most hefty meal at AYAM GORENG KALASAN which included a dessert even, later amounts to only MYR 25. Alhamdulilah.. kenyang.

AIR ASIA PRE-BOOKED MEAL

We were off to a happy start when our pre-booked meal of Nasi Padang  (MYR12/meal) on the Air Asia flight proved to be delicious. Like pure chewy daging rendang on board the plane! We underestimated how quick the journey could be because as soon as we opened the aromatic, piping hot packaging.. the flight attendants were already bringing the black plastic bag around to collect the rubbish. Argh.. panik. I blom makan..

Mr Husband ate, well …  swallowed it all in a jiff. I chose to pack it for dinner later at the hotel. There wasn’t enough time for a quick photo too but we did have a snap of our meals during the return flight from Medan to KLIA2. This time it was Nasi Lemak Pak Naseer and Nasi Tomato with Ayam Percik. The latter dish was Hazeeq’s favourite. He kept asking for more ‘matik’ [read=nasi] throughout the flight. The percik was a bit spicy for the boy but he liked the rice anyway.

And if I heard it correctly.. I think Air Asia is introducing a Kids Meal on board soon.

Great.“With Air Asia, every kid can eat”

Cafe Bang Memeng,

Komplek Istana Maimun

This was an impromptu breakfast meal. We were secretly scouting for the Halal logo from the few eateries (gerai) available within the grounds of Istana Maimun. Then, jeng jeng jeng.. we spotted one of the cooks in a hijab. So in the spirit of InsyaAllah Halal.. we ordered simple nasi goreng with jus durian belanda.

JO’S FAMOUS TEA HOUSE,

SUN PLAZA

20140822_122733

Perhaps this is not a tourist-y destination, but we were willing to try anything for lunch. Especially since we don’t have a proper tour guide to consult. Plus we couldn’t find the famous Restoran Garuda most bloggers went to during their trip to Medan. Still, Jo’s Tea House was not disappointing. A very pretty lady came to take our order. Prettier than Bunga Cinta Lestari, I have to say.

Mr Husband tried the Mee Udon Medan. As for myself, I went for the Rawon Setan.Which is beef broth with bits of beansprouts and an egg. For a while, i thought the Rawon looked like brewed Jamu  – pretty spicy looking. Rawon was to be eaten with rice but well.. I just had rice for breakfast. Diet konon. Though I ended up nicking Hazeeqs Monte Cristo Banana Chocolate Bread. He was too busy posing for the camera in sipping the iced lemon tea.

To be honest, Rumah Hijau’s Banana Chocolate Cake lagik nyaman. And this Rumah Hijau is in Kuching, Sarawak. One of our must eat places when go back Kuching.

77 ES TELER,

SUN PLAZA

Dessert does not come any sweeter than the Es Nangka we had at this joint. Nangka is Jackfruit. It was overwhelmingly sweet thus we were glad we shared the bowl of Es (ICE). And to wash it down – another sweet coconut drink.

I missed breakfast.. then crap happens

Any health instructor, nutritionist or physical trainer would tell you to :

  1. Not miss breakfast
  2. To eat breakfast within one hour of waking up from sleep to set the metabolism rate for the day

I broke both rules. I had a late breakfast at the cafe and my calorie consumption of the day was erratic. Its as though all the rice in the world wants to jump into my mouth and dive into the sea of the stomach to be digested by acid. Can you imagine? Nasi goreng for breakfast and then nasi dagang for lunch? Of which I actually finished ALL the rice?

20140820_193258-001

Crappy eating did not stop there. I consumed a sweet can drink on my way home followed by a glass of hot, creamy chocolate drink and a bowl of Nata de Coco. Oh gosh.. I might as well call today my cheat day.

I rarely miss breakfast. At home, a simple breakfast would be slices of toast with butter or peanut butter. Sometimes sandwiches with fillings. On a rajin day, I’d defrost burger or hotdog to be fried the next morning. Occasionally I’d be really enthusiastic in breakfast making and will cook up a full English breakfast with eggs, bake beans and potato hash. A pancake or lempeng at most but these are reserved for weekend menus. And on malas days?

“abang.. beli roti canai please..”

Murtabak Maggi Kari

” Champions are born at breakfast “

I had these for brunch in the Operating Theatre pantry yesterday. It was prepared by one of my nurses from home. Idecided to serve the same thing for breakfast for Mr Husband today. This simple dish is called Murtabak Maggi.

murtabak megi

Ingredients:

2 packets of Maggi mee Curry

3 eggs

half of big onion

a hotdog cut into little pieces or any protein of your desire

How to make them:

  1. Fry the onion and hotdog with a bit of oil
  2. Meanwhile, simmer the Maggi in hot water. Then take it out. Do not put in the Curry powder.
  3. Mix the fried onions and hotdog with egg and the noodles in one bowl.
  4. Shape them into size of batters of your choice and fry them till they get crunchy.
