Death cleaning

Death cleaning is challenging. It requires focus, physical stamina and a level of detachment and ‘unbotheredness’ to even start the process.

My brother is planning to get hitched soon and has the intention to bring the bride back home for a while before they find a place to rent. The current house is our family home and over the course of time it has become quite worn out and full of ‘things’. After all, we have lived in the house for over 10 years and when it comes to a family of 6, that is a lot of things.

The initial plan was for all of us four siblings to get together and tackle the problem. However, some of us did not get our leaves approved and my sister, had a last-minute course to attend. So it was just me battling against the dust and clutter. I managed to sift through my late mother’s wardrobe and it was astounding to discover how many clothes she had – both worn and new! It seems that she used to have a habit of buying those buy1 free1 items but never actually got to give those garments to people she was meaning to give it to. Thus, ended up with me being puzzled at the site of so many T-shirts with the same design in the wardrobe.

I shared my experience of decluttering on Instagram that weekend and an acquaintance recommended me this book. I managed to find it at Shopee for RM59.94. Quite a splurge for a softcover book but I’m excited about it’s content. It did not disappoint me at all.

I felt so connected to the author’s problems and felt that her thoughts on this subject matter were familiar yet fresh and very insightful. It’s like having a cheeky grandmother telling you what to do now before you die. In a way, it’s about decluttering and making life simple so you wouldn’t leave too much trash for your loved ones to pick up once you’re 6 feet under.

I am inspired to do my own death cleaning too. In fact, I feel it is an instinctive thing to do every so many years as my family’s life cycle changes over time. Now I am discarding old baby clothes, baby gadgets and toys as I am clear that I have no plans to conceive another baby. I have been making trips to the bin at Lotus to donate my old clothes that don’t fit anymore and those that are out of fashion. This included linens for single beds causing our house to have double beds only. The single set was from both of our ‘single’ years.

I am into house chores again this time of the year. I believe there will be a time when I’d enjoy photography suddenly or journaling and all that jazz. It’s a cyclical process.

Cleaning and Organizing my Minci home

It does look a bit crazy when I first started with this Organizing Streak. I think I got more obsessed with cleaning after I gave birth to Ninie. My ultimate goal in cleaning is that ; my house is soooo clean and organized, I get to mop my kitchen everynight. LOL.

And it has yet to happen.

There’s only 4 of us in this house. Despite my attempts to declutter and donate our good stuff – there seems to be still so many things in the house. I haven’t been getting myself any new clothes this year but my MOM has been buying me and giving away HER clothes to me instead. So I am kinda the end receiver of her generosity and decluttering efforts at her own home. HA HA.

BUT , of course I still try.

Making lists. Getting inspirations. Especially from local Organization Guru Hani Mynis. These are a few templates she suggested to get started with. OKlah. Sesuai.

Eid is coming soon. I hope my home is ready by then. InsyaAllah. After all, Cleanliness is next to Godliness.

Carboot Sale – What I learnt from the experience

Our car boot sale would not have materialized if my sister was not on board.

We read about carboot tips from experienced car booters online. We screened our items for any faults – even if one shirt has no button on it, it will not be included in the sale because kita bukan nak jual sampah, kita nak jual barang baik punya at a low price. If say after 3 attempts at selling it off, the item is not bought – the stash will go to charity for those in need. In Malaysia, there is always someone in need. We just have to know where to find them. Some are easily found through charity organizations. Others may be missed out due to location or other factors we have yet to discover.

We booked our spot early

We brought our floating money – those small change you give to buyers

We folded our recyclable plastic bags from home so buyers need not worry about how to bring back home their goods

We brought our breakfast to the site and shared it with our ‘neighbours’ – then we kept our food trash properly in our trash bag so we wouldn’t litter the area unnecessarily

We brought chairs for us to sit down and mini fans to combat the dry and hot weather

We labelled our things well and are open to negotiations

We followed every single advice we gathered through the world wide web to make our sale a success. Once our boot has been set up – there were only a few things to do

  • wait for customers
  • people watching and profiling

It seems that our area is heavily populated by generations like ourselves. Young parents with toddlers and preschool going kids. There were not many elderly parents nor were there many teenagers. Perhaps the latter were still in bed on a weekend which left us wondering where the younger uns are. It’s like if we  have to go to war, there will be a lot of widows and orphans left behind. So our baju nenek2 were not selling fast enough including my stickers and planner related items. I should just pack them and sell them online. Or have a try setting up a booth at a planner related event.

Then I noticed that we have a lot of young foreigners working as domestic maids and contract workers looking for cheap clothing. The contractors were looking for worn out T-shirts they could use for their daily work whereas the maids were looking for fancy blouses. What we were not expecting was that the ladies were not looking for the sizes that we have – in fact even the locals were the same. They wanted bigger sized clothes. I almost forget Malaysia is an overweight and obese country as compared to the other ASEAN nations. So yeah.. my kurus clothes did not have as many buyers as opposed to my maternity clothes.

One thing stood out though on that day of how a foreign contract worker was looking for books to read. I love people who read and this particular man was looking for an English novel. I handed him a few to choose and he bought one off the shelves. It was a rare sight but I thought it was cute to have this big man in his safety helmet and boots, looking all rugged and bulky  – having in his hand a pink plastic bag with my book and 2 free owl bookmarks and a self-made calendar. I hope he finds the book interesting. I was a bit disappointed that no one wanted my older edition of Reader’s Digest – where are all the bookworms? It’s only RM5!!!

My sister and I were not there to make big bucks. It was more of an activity we can do together as sisters. Married with kids plak tuh..  At the same time decluttering our home. We felt like we achieved something at the end and now we are planning to do a Sarawak themed car boot sale. It would be interesting the next available weekend. Time to plan! Where is my washi and stickers!!

Later I will tell you what I did with the money I got. It’s got something to do with my Tabung Minci.

Freezing storage, havent quite got it yet

“Organization isn’t about perfection; it’s about efficiency, reducing stress and clutter, saving time and money and improving your overall quality of life.”

I try my best to prepare everything beforehand. Just so that when the time comes for the meals to be prepared, Id be able to get it done in a jiff.

Mr Husband for one is a person who (thankfully) loves to shop. He’d go to Tesco or Aeon and randomly select poultry or fishes and put them in his basket. Once he reaches home however, he doesnt unpack those things and would just shove them in the freezer. Receipt, plastic bag and all.

So I find myself responsible to sort it out. After all, he has done more than what I would expect from any man. It is now my turn to give. I managed to divide the raw materials into sizeable portions for both of us. I ‘siang’ed the fishes, descaled them.. la la la. I managed to cut my fingers in the process too. Ouch.

But this is only the upper shelf. My lower shelf is still cluttered from the ‘fast foods’.
