I created this with Kingsoft Writer

I had no idea it was possible until I scrolled the pictures of an Instagrammer. Of how they created the company’s logo and pamphlets by using only Microsoft Word. In my case, I used Kingsoft Writer but well… the idea is the same.

Some people even took it a step further by creating low budget book covers and such. All one need is the will to learn. Plus a hint of creativity. And lots of good ideas. Ha ha.

Here’s from a newbie for this new year. Looking forward to creating more personalized logos for this baby.

Sayonara to you my precious friend

Perhaps my hospital is best known as a transit hospital. A place where doctors wait and serve until it is time to move to greener pastures. While it is a lost to our patients for losing such great minds and love, as one of those chronic people who are still holding on to our comfort zones, I see it as a great opportunity to meet lots and lots of people. From different walks of life, of varied medical experience. Yup, I’m still here going on to my 4th year.

Another colleague is leaving by next week. We are organizing a farewell party for her tomorrow. Earlier this month she already belanja a few of us a meal at the ikan bakar area in Duyung. I heard it cost her a leg. Ha ha. So I guess its time to return the favour on a larger and more formal scale.

I have been asked to get her a gift. Hence, for practicality sake I bluntly texted this colleague and asked her if she wanted anything special. She cheekily replied, I want a new water bottle, to replace my orange one.

So a water bottle it is. But since I have like nearly 200 to spend, I’d probably end up getting something that she doesn’t use as well. On top of the ciput water bottle of course. ย I mean, what do you give someone who has everything. Someone who drives a Mercedes Benz, a beetle.. someone who owns her own practice.

If it was me, I would like my farewell gift to be;

  1. a cute box filled with faber castell black ink pen sampai penuh
  2. stuff like stickers and sticky pads for my planner
  3. a good story book
  4. a small handbag

ha ha ha. Now this sounds like a birthday gift.

Sedeqah – The 5 ringgit story

A story of humanity in Malaysia went viral recently.

Aย lady paid in advance MYR 50 for her fuel but her tank was already full at MYR 45. She couldn’t be bothered to make another walking trip back to the counter and reclaim the remaining MYR 5. So she just waited at the petrol pump to see if there was any motorcyclists who needed the extra fuel. Almost immediately, a young man came by in his kapchai. The lady urged him to take over the pump.

“here’s 5 ringgit worth of fuel. Please take it”

The boy took it happily and the lady noticed that he was in tears.

“Whats wrong boy?”

“Kak,ย I have not received my paycheque from work. I only have MYR10 with me. Just a while ago I was thinking if I were to pay for my fuel MYR3, I would only have MYR7 to last till its end. Alhamdulilah, Allah has greater plans -He gave me Rezki in the form of free motor fuel”

The article went on to mention how in each of our Rezki , there could be some which belongs to others. Hence the concept of Zakat or menyucikan harta comes to mind.

Now, what amused me were the comments by readers following the article. I saw a few comments that resonates along the same meaning

I wish I could be like you. I wish that Allah could also grant me the same opportunity to do so to other human beings.ย

The secret is, the opportunity has always been there. Its either we have been ignorant or choose not to perform these good deeds. If you want to be like the lady, perform SEDEQAH. And there are plenty of ways to do SEDEQAH. It can be in money or kind. It can be something that you do in routine or on special occasions.

SedeQah is when

you smile

you tell theย taxi driver to keep the change

you recite the AlFatihah to the ill or dead

you carpool

you share a meal with the poor

you donate to the flood victims

you feed a stray cat

you help hold the door

you spare some small change

you wakaf some reading materials or the Quranย to the masjid

Indahnya Islam..

friday rants regarding .. medicine

The medical fraternity is again being ridiculed by self proclaimed miracle healers condemning modern medicine . One particular homeopathy practitioner has made herself viral on Facebook for promoting alternative therapy to dengue. While Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) is welcoming complementary and traditional medicine on board by setting up centres in selected hospitals around Malaysia, there is much to scrutinize regarding these alternative pathway of medical care. Especially practitioners which are not registered and certified by KKM.

Now and again I see patients defaulting treatment in favour of hydrotherapy sessions or herbal pills. I mean everyone likes different things. If it works for you, go ahead but don’t step into my Casualty half dead hoping to have springs in your step by the next day.

I hate how people like to compare with practices of yesteryear.

“Dolok merik baby minum ayek mati, idoop jak nya.. kenak kinek tok suma benda misi madah sik boleh. adakah merik susu jak.. kerin lah tekaq nya”

“Urang tua dolok rokok idup jak sampe 80”

“Dolok umo 12 da makei moto raun kampung.. kinek tok 15 pun sik boleh naik moto”

Above all, my hatred towards those who thinks medicine is against Islam. That we are changing fate. That we are challenging Allah’s Will . If Medicine wasn’t made to exist, He wouldn’t have said

Setiap sakit ada penawarnya

Allah wouldn’t have bestowed Ibn Sina (Avicenna) with such a genius mind considering his extensive corpus of work and was even described as ‘The Father of Early Modern Medicine’! And if women weren’t meant to venture into medicine, surely He wouldn’t make our Medical Srikandi at where they are ย – Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood, Prof Madya Dr Harlina and Prof Dr Muhaya to name a few. Kan? At a position where they can serve to the ummah both as a healer and a da’i.

Ill souls on a weekend

Baby Hazeeq seems to live in an imaginary yet effective little bubble. For he is the only one among us 3 who is not infected with the flu and fever. I’m not quite sure whether to rejoice that he is well or feel sorry that he has to play on his own.

The terrible bug attacked Mr Husband and I last weekend.

I had aย terrible oncall in Casualty. Despite a grateful 3 hour snooze from 0330 to 0630 I woke up to a flat tyre that needed changing and a tortoise speed drive back home. Once at home, I was greeted by a couldn’t-be-bothered husband on the couch. He muttered an ‘eh’ from beneath the blankets and continued to wrap himself in it like a mummy. Dopey from probably his chlorpheniramine. Baby Hazeeq was already doing the helicopter spin on the floor with ‘snacks’ on the table and the TV switched on to Frozen. A bait to leave the father alone. And it’s only 9 in the morning.

I managed a quick breakfast. Chucked down two tabs of paracetamol and a tab of piriton down my throat before I too, took a spot in front of the TV in the living room to …. rest. In between my ‘nap’, I would be awakened by Hazeeq playing his dinosaurs on my contoured body of hills and mountains. Later, I am supposed to be a giant in a deep slumber. I just have to make a roar now and again to make him happy. Once Hazeeq got bored, he told me to change the channel to Minions. And then Frozen (again). And then Monsters University. Oh well, at least I get an 80 -90 min rest in between.

Lunch was toast and leftover pasta for the little guy. Mr Husband and I just gulped down glasses of water.

We felt better during tea time but we were still groggy. We had pizza for takeout. And mushroom soup for the soul. Perhaps the happiest person was Hazeeq by then as now he gets undivided attention from both his ill zombie- like parents. Who happened to be doctors. And is expected to come back to work again the following day. MONDAY.
