The moment it was opened, the kids and I briskly walked over to try it out. Nujum Cafe promoted itself as a place that serves Western cuisine, and I was craving a huge chunk of meat. I would say that the price range is about Medium. It is not as pricey as the high end places like Chef Wan. Nor is it priced like the regular family bistro like Mr SteakHouse.

On our first visit there, I ordered a rib-eye. My kids had the familiar spaghetti and macaroni. We shared a Tiramisu Crepe and 2 bottled sodas from Haus Boom. It tasted like those Cola candies. My steak was just shy of RM100, and my kids’ dishes were roughly in mid RM20s.

The rib-eye was prepared quite well. It was not tough to chew.

Hence, during my subsequent visit there with my husband, I ordered a Sirloin steak. However, that second time around, the meat did not taste as good. Maybe it was a different chef. The tiramisu crepe still tasted fabulous, but I really hoped that they would remove the doily paper underneath the crepe.

Overall, Nujum Cafe provides good food. The atmosphere is also Instagrammable, which is a must nowadays. I look forward to many more meals afterwards.

Majlis Anugerah Pelajar Kolej PERMATA

Alhamdulilah, Ee managed to secure a CGPA of >3.6 upon completing Asas 1. This is not to say that students with pointers less than mentioned are not smart. They are equally smart, only that they are excelling more at non-academic aspects of their education.

The Majlis Anugerah Pelajar (MAP) ceremony was held at the UKM Bangi campus. It was less than a 20-minute drive from my hotel. However, parking spots were scarce. This is expected as we have parents from all levels of study coming to celebrate their children’s success. The phone connection here was equally bad. It was so hard to get a signal. Or maybe the hall was built with a system that intercepts all forms of phone signal. If that is the case, I am not surprised, as this is a centre of high-performing academicians. Apart from giving out scrolls and plaques, there were also performances from students, like singing and dancing.

My husband was not able to attend MAP as he had ongoing work commitments in Bangkok. The ceremony was completed by noon. We headed straight to the highway after that to Melaka. On the way, we stopped at the new RNR Seremban for prayers and lunch. The surau was so beautiful. There were loads of restaurants and food trucks. Ee wanted to eat A&W’s coney dog, so we ordered that. Then, we bought Boost Drinks to sip on in the car on our way home.

Once we reached Melaka, I changed into a more comfortable attire. The plan is to walk over to my MIL’s house, which is within walking distance, to pick up my daughter. She had to sleep over at her cousin’s house the night before since she still had school. The next day, I brought them out to dinner at this fantastic new cafe. That will be another blog post.

D Gateway Perdana Hotel

The plan is to attend my son’s Majlis Anugerah Pelajar at UKM Bangi. Since his event coincides with the ASEAN meeting, I thought I should stay somewhere nearby in case there’s heavy traffic coming my way. After all, I am not familiar with the whereabouts of places in Selangor and W.P. Kuala Lumpur. My husband had an outstation duty, which is why he couldn’t attend the ceremony. My daughter, on the other hand, has school the next day. So I left her in Melaka for a sleepover with her cousin. Thankfully, they are enrolled in the same school.

I brought my mini suitcase with me to work so that I could head straight to the highway after office hours. I chose D Gateway Perdana Hotel because it seemed close to UKM Bangi on the map. It is easy to find once I am off the highway, too. True enough, it was, and the location was superb. Although the layout of the hotel seems odd, there were so many places to eat nearby!

The hotel provides FREE parking. The reception is situated right in the middle of the quiet mall. However, it is very lively outside the mall. It is also particularly close to a shopping area and a park. I was able to do some brisk walking around the area and also on my designated floor, as the rooms were arranged to be in a giant loop. The quiet surroundings can be a bit eerie as a solo female traveler.

My Superior Queen room had an interesting layout. Upon entering, I was faced with a staircase leading up to my bed and bathroom. It was a unique experience for that one-night stay. I paid RM 92.38 for it, including taxes and fees. For dinner, I bought mi kolok from one of the stalls at the market just below the hotel. Then, I bought some bread and additional water for my breakfast in the room. I did get some coffee from Richiamo Mart the next morning, just before I checked out.

Overall, as a budget hotel, it certainly exceeded my expectations. I would love to bring my family for a stay here again as I feel that there are lots of other interesting restaurants and stalls that I haven’t tried yet. It would be a culinary adventure.

I will tell you about the Majlis Anugerah Pelajar in a different post.

A new asset to liability ratio

Recently, my ASB Surrender Value money has been credited into my account. I used all of it and topped it up with a bit of my own money to pay part of the principal of my housing loan. Alhamdulilah, now my new asset-to-liability percentage is 81% to 19%. That’s a huge dip from the previous liability percentage of 34%.

Having been really focused on settling and reducing my debts for the past year, I realised that I don’t need a lot of things anyway. Not to the extent of becoming a minimalist, but more of being comfortable and enough. This puts me in a positive direction to carve my way towards an early retirement. With Allah’s will.
