This old folks home was established first in 2013 at Taman Seri Gombak and later on moved to Ampang in 2015. There are 15 ladies here – all of them have never been married and have no close relatives to bring them home and take care of them. Most have no serious chronic illness. The centre focuses on being as independent as they can and providing public education towards caring for the elderly. The home also takes in 5 Warga Perlindungan (asnaf, single parents) who they train to care for the residents in the house. In return, they have a roof on their head and means to continue their daily lives especially if they have dependents under them.

The owner, Puan Faezah was previously a Palliative Care nurse who once worked with Hospice Malaysia. Armed with her experience, she not only wants to care for the elderly but also wishes to impart her knowledge to the public regarding the geriatric population. She looks forward to visits from individuals and groups to come see her home. She conducts talks on Communication Skills with The Elderly, End of life care, conducts family conference and many more. She herself, is hungry, to learn more, not only to update her already vast skills but also things like social media so she could get the word out more for her organization.

For this short programme, we invited 3 masseuse to come by and give the residents a shoulder & foot rub, we had a short session to just get to know more about the home, and later a mini lunch to end our day. It was a short 3 hour affair.

Take away points;

  1. With age, our 5 senses that we usually take for granted will slowly decline in function. Our eyes, ears, our speech , our cognitive function.. and this will certainly affect how we live and interact in our daily lives. So we try to be prepared for old age. 20190629_113216-014612573928237638829.jpeg
  2. We are all agents of change. Being an SK (Srikandi), the label should be a catalyst for us to not only make our lives and our families at their best but also serve the community in whatever capacity that you can.
  3. LOVE can be the magic potion in rehabilitation. Just like Wan. She came to the old folks home bed bound requiring a feeding tube. With time, she gained energy and Will, so much so that her Ryles tube managed to be removed and now she can sit up  and ambulate with her Zimmer frame independently.
  4. To care for someone, we need to get to know that person well for the most optimum care. Everyone has different needs. And we need to match these requirements with the correct knowledge and skills in handling them.
  5. Getting into a fight (even among the elderly) is inevitable. This friction can cause conflict in the home thus has to be addressed accordingly. Puan Faezah interestingly mentioned that these elderly ladies needs to be reminded from time to time, just like a kid, to be on their best behaviour when visitors come. Quarrels also occur simply because they have lost their hearing hence a communication breakdown.
  6. CHARITY – To help those in need, we need to start with ourselves. It is best to make sure that we are first ‘full’, happy and enough. And then, our close family is too enough. Meaning they have our attention, our love.. in other words, their basic needs to function as a family member is met. Only then, we are in a way Ready and Equipped to help those who are less fortunate.
  7. CHARITY work is evolving. It’s not just about receiving funds and giving basic care. Now, we are heading towards educating the public, empowering the less fortunate to be confident in themselves so they could communicate with everybody else.
  8. Not all elderly folks are SENILE. Some, has mental faculties which are still sharp. However, once their cognitive function deteriorates, they behave just like a baby.
  9. It’s not cheap to care for an elderly person.
  10. Social Media is vital nowadays to spread the news. So more people could help them. The home wants us to share the message that [1] if your niyat is right, it doesn’t matter if the home has only 1 resident – you would still want to help. [2] Not all Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM) approved homes are financially stable, they still need a lot of support, especially funding when operating the place.

For this programme, I was in charge of the goodie bags. I have to admit, there were certain things in the bag which were inappropriate. At such an age, in Malaysia, it is less of wanting to sit down and read a book or magazine. For to them, in this home, it is more to fulfill the basic needs in life. Being able to just stay awake for a few hours before sleeping almost all the time. They just want to hold someones hand, or being cuddled, talk to someone, sing, bath independently, put on their clothes on their own, eat and rest comfortably.

In the bag there is a pair of kaftan for sleeping, foot patch, hand cream, a roll-on perfume, a digital tasbih, some reading materials and a carton of drink. In retrospective, perhaps the ones that they could benefit most were the kaftan, foot patch and hand cream. The drinks, Puan Faezah said they will collect and share them during mealtimes as poor coordination could result in spills in the room which later attracts ants.

Now I know better.

Over the years, ever since the home was established, 15 elderly ladies has passed away due to old age. Each death leaves a void in their heart. InsyaAllah, for all of them, a good ending and will earn a place in Jannah.

So, if you are in Ampang and you want to extend help, Pusat Jagaan Sri Mesra is there to welcome you with open arms.

A review on the Althea Korea A’Bloom Collection

I am a fan of K-Beauty products and when Althea Korea introduced the ABloom collection, I knew that I really had to try. My beautiful package came in a customized EId-theme box which was really cute.

I received ;

THE MERINGUE PUFFS

This is the first time I’m using a beauty blender to apply my makeup. For a first timer using this, I thought it was kinda cool. I use the big one to smooth out my BB Cream whereas the small ones for my concealer. Later, I am going to try it with perhaps blusher and eyeshadow.

BHA BLACKHEAD BUSTER

This is something new to me. I was familiar with the scrubs or nose masks of all sorts to remove blackheads but never have I come across a blaster like this.

It comes in a cute stick form that you could apply straight to your face after cleansing.

I would leave it for a few minutes on my face and then wash it off with water. I do feel a tinge of minty-ness on my face upon application.

This product is readily available on the website and retails at RM19 for 8g worth of substance. It’s so small and convenient that it fits into my travel toileteries bag! You can [purchase it here]

A’BLOOM FRUIT MASK SHEET

The masks were a blessing to my constant tiring daily schedule. These masks have common ingredients like fraxinus rhynchophyyla extract, ocimum (basil) and acmella oleracea extract. However, each masks also has additional ingredients for specific functions.

AC-ME PEACH : Anti Blemish Peach Mask Sheet

Ingredient highlight : Peach extract, tea tree leaf
[purchase me here]

I would love to be in a situation where I am fully relaxed on a bed with my face mask on – but due to my busy schedule, I do my masking while I go about my daily life activities. I find that these masks have really generous gunk upon removing them from the package. That means if I wear the mask sheet, my sister can, if she want to, dab the residual ‘slime’ on her face and massage it through.

It has 25g of essence in a pouch with an eco-friendly mask sheet. With a little more practice I can apply my mask like its a screen protector.

WATER-ME-LONG : Moisturizing Watermelon Mask Sheet

Ingredient highlight : watermelon extract, lavender & shea butter cream

[purchase me here]

This is me taking the opportunity to do some masking while doing some stuff on my computer. By stuff, that would sometimes mean ‘intense online shopping/bidding’ after a headache navigating through excel. Help.

SPARKLE-ME-BRIGHT : Brightening Lemon-lime Mask sheet

Ingredient highlight : lemon, lime, green tea
[purchase me here]

This mask sheet boasts of being able to brighten your complexion which I fully agree as it is a known property for any citrus-based product.

I feel it could benefit those who wants a quick glow before a big event. Say an impromptu dinner date, an important business pitch or even those who wants to look alive despite feeling dead inside. The latter sounds like me for most of the time.
Haha..

AVO-CUDDLE-ME : Nourishing Avocado Mask Sheet

Ingredient highlight : avocado & hibiscus extract, shea butter cream

[purchase me here]

This mask claims to have wrinkles improvement effect. In other words, nourishing the skin to slow down aging. In this photo, I was trying to go for the calming, spiritual effect. However, it looks downright comical and weird right now.

Using it in Ramadhan, especially in between prayers as we wait for Tarawikh is a good idea. The mask does not slip off as I do some Quran reading, zikr or just sit there, shutting my eyes while sitting down.

I think I need to use more than this one mask to fully appreciate the wonders though.

Personally, I think these masks also serves as wonderful options as goodie bags fillers. After all they are only priced at RM2/sheet. And if we buy in 10s, it is sold at RM18/10 pieces.

Is that not a bargain??!

I am already contemplating on getting these masks from althea.kr for a beauty workshop I am getting involved with tentatively in September or October. Let’s see if we can scout for other pretty things on althea.kr too.

My mothers genes have Generosity encoded in them and because of that Tabung Minci was created

I made a day trip to my moms home last weekend. It was a 2 hour drive from my place and I was anxious with the thought of bringing my kids along. I prayed that they will behave and that Ninie especially would not poop in the car. Alhamdulilah, the journey went fine. The pu rpose of the trip was to send my mom n my sister’s stuff.

In return, amusingly, I got stuff too. Which was way more than what I have brought with me initally. I ended up huggling back to Melaka a set of Tefal cookware, baking items, clothes, a book and food. The ever most important deer meat ! My mom will not let the matter rest until I taste the venison.

Mum also updated me about her social activities – her marhaban group. She said their annual dinner is coming soon and that they will be an election for the committee.

You know being a leader, you still need someone with money. At least, that is how it is in my group, it keeps the group going. Self funding helps to oil those little bits in the operation for it to run smoothly, she says

She narrated how sometimes she would have to pay things forward first, lend money to those in need and paid back without interest, get gifts to boost motivation but still she felt great to be able to do that. To her, these deeds are a form of sedekah. To her, Allah has placed her in a position where she is able to lend a helping hand in ways that she is capable of. And if her role comes in the form of giving financial aid, then why not?

I have always known her to be really wise with money. Thrifty but generous at the same time. I learnt from her that as moms – we should think about our children’s finances. She would keep part of her money in our savings account and this went on until I finally got into college. Because of that, I am doing the same for my Syazmins. I would keep aside as many RM20 notes as I can to be kept in their accounts.

As of my mom being generous, paying for a friends meal, hosting a party or getting gift for people that she loves dearly just comes by naturally. She would buy things from friends if she knows that her friends could make a living out of it. She is that supportive. And that gesture is slowly becoming second nature to myself as well. I mean, I try. And it does make you feel good about yourself when you do things For Yourself and not expecting people to return the favor. Making someone else happy makes you happy. Most of the time. And every good things does not have to come in the form of giving money.

Despite that I still make my own charity fund which I call Tabung Minci. Inspired by my moms generosity for sure. This is where my monthly elaun keraian goes too. From here, I make scheduled monthly donations to Al-Yateem Islamic Relief Programme and Mercy Malaysia. The remaining funds I would use for the occasional public donation drives, to sponsor activities related to clinic or personal causes, individual sedekahs etc.

I took time off recently to sort out my burned out life. I also decided it is a good time to keep my Tabung Minci engines running. I am preparing care packages for kids & babies that come to my Klinik Desa. I sent out Parcel Kasih Sayang (kinda like a Raya goodie box) to my Wanita Besi Eropah  (WBE) girls too few days ago. On top of that, I made Eid cookies for my friends at work. I made the usual Cornflakes with Dates & another variation is Rose Honey Cornflakes. I bought the Rose Honey from Ninso.

It’s just a simple gesture to acknowledge how much I care about them too. These, I feel is my form of good deed and sedekah too. I just hope Allah accepts all of them and grant me Pahala and Jannah.  This small act would not have been possible without the support of my husband and blessings from my mom. I fund her activities monthly (read: elaun belanja .. ha ha ha). I hope to also reap the benefits from her good deeds too. InsyaAllah.

Feel free to read about my Tabung Minci ventures by searching hashtags : TabungMinci & Sedekah/ Sedeqah. I even dedicated a page for Tabung Minci for my own record. 2019 has yet to be updated but we are threading the year slowly.

Body Scrub Workshop by Workshop 17

MainPlaceMall USJ had a Craft Fair happening just this weekend. I loved that apart from the craft, there were stationaries and plenty of workshops to join in. I missed the Stationery Buffet though.  *cry glitter* Haih, if only I lived in USJ. There were a lot of interesting stalls. I even had a henna tattoo drawn on my hand.

I signed up for the Body Scrub Class hosted by Workshop 17. Although my mom was like skeptic and remarked ,” benda tu pun nak belajar?” – I deafened my ears and went for it anyway. Moms like that. Lepas tu dia nak jugak. Ha ha ha.

I used Google Maps to navigate my way to Mainplace Mall and it was only a 20 min drive from my moms house. The kids? Left them with the dad.

Our instructor for the hour was called Yen. She was so pretty and gentle. Always encouraging us to be creative. She even gave us extra tips on how to further make our scrubs become prettier.

We each received a goodie bag. Inside, there were 2 empty jars for us to put our scrubs in, a wooden spatula and cute, instruction cards showing us how to make these things. I was so pleased.

I signed up for the class online at a fee of RM 79/pax. This is after Craft Affair announced it on their IG page. As usual, I was anxious for having to go alone. And meet new people. Although I also have that part of me who wants to hang out with new friends. New butterflies, maybe? hihi. So the Introvert needs to be at least an Ambivert during these events.

We have the option of creating our scrubs from either essential oils or food meaning oatmeals, coffee, cocoa and green tea. The base is sugar. Be it brown or white sugar. Then we have food gel for colours with various ‘toppings’ such as rose petals and buds. I thought the table was colourful.

These are mine.

1 : Chocolate + vanilla + rose water

( to wind down and relax)

2 : Lemon + grapefruit + bergamot

( to freshen and revitalize)

Yen did caution us to keep the jars in a cool area. But not the fridge. And definitely not under the sun or in the heat of a closed room.

I came home from the class learning something new. I think it is something that I could do at home and teach others.  I look forward to attend classes similar like this in the future like making lip balms and such. Perhaps later, I will gain my wings to become a better Butterfly Blogger and then, I’d have enough experience and courage to attend next years Butterfly party. InsyaAllah.

Are you tired? Try the spiritual solution – Tasbih Fatimiyyah

I am currently experiencing another burnout.

We are at this season where we are seeing up to 200+ patients a day. Despite trying to space out appointments – it is always full at this time of the year. The burden is shared between at least 6 medical docs in a day but sometimes we have to make do with 4. And that could be exhausting with all the talking and thinking. There is just no time to take a sip of that water or go to the loo.

Then there is family to think about. My unfolded laundry is so piled up I could actually make 2 forts out of it. I have not been cooking as much too. I rarely watch TV. But I always make time for my HoboMinci, doTERRA and blog. Well, I try. Because these are outlets I need to go to after a stressful day.

Sometimes I get cross when I feel that my husband is not pulling his weight in the household – only to realize that he too is doing what he can for the family on top of completing his phD. The fact that he preps breakfast for the kids and shower them in the morning is a blessing already. I should be grateful. Alhamdulilah. Coz the only thing I do in the morning is take care of myself anyway. And he never demands for homecooked  dinner.

It is at times like this that I feel I want to quit. Or I hate my job sorta thing. But I know I have to keep going and move on. So – take that pit stop, repair what you need and get on your way. Coincidentally, I came across a short clip by Aida Azlin recently which struck a chord in my heart. She talks about tasbih fatimiyyah and I guess that is how we wage war against tiredness etc. We nurture the power of the mind with zikr & doa.

Tasbih fatimiyyah:

subhanallah x33

alhamdulillah x33

allahuakbar x34

with 100% conviction from our heart

Zikir to me are not just words. But it’s a form of worship where we could take as a conversation and speak to Allah about our problems and ask that He helps solve it. InsyaAllah.

With Zikr and doa, I pray that Allah bestowed upon me this path of turmoil and challenges because He thinks I am worthy of it. And that something good will come out of it. Mana tau dalam penat, takde selera makan kita jadi kurus. Ha ha ha ha.
