The Sedekah Scene in NUR drama (TV3). My thoughts.

The Malay drama series, NUR was a big hit when it came out as it brings on very powerful messages. Concerning religion, relationship between human beings and good deeds.

Towards the end of this short series, there was a scene of Nur’s mother, a senior prostitute crying in the streets as she was chased out of her own home by her greedy pimp. She was looking for Nur, her daughter, also a prostitute, saved from the ‘lorong’ by a young ustaz. Nur’s mother was alone, cold and hungry. Her presence was almost non-existent to the passersby despite the various ruckus she got into along the way. After searching for her daughter aimlessly in the big streets of the city, she finally caved in to her exhaustion and lay down motionless on the brick ground.

A man came from nowhere and saw her. He must have felt sorry for her and decided to give her a form of sedekah. He handed her money and walked away. She accepted the note. It was the only monetary sedekah she received for that day. She was grateful and tucked it safely in her blouse and lied back down in hunger.

.

.

The sedekah she got was RM1. What decent meal or room or just a blanket can she ever get with RM1?

And that’s when I got a very powerful message of SEDEKAH.

We are always told to give with IKHLAS. Meaning you do not have to give a lot, but just as much that you can out of sincerity. Hence, it tends to make you feel good when you feel that the RM 1 you gave, was out of ikhlas and that deed is redeemable for a pahala. Because you are ikhlas.

But we are never taught nor emphasized that the Sedekah we give should be Beneficial. Useful. Have worth. It is time we should start learning what form of Sedekah is proper for certain groups of people. This is because we want our gifts to be of use and the less fortunate could benefit from it.

Giving RM1 would be useful if you are raising funds to build a school or madrasah. But it would be of no value if you were to give it to the beggars in Africa for example. Donating a ripple mattress to a poor family whose family member has a stroke sounds good and helpful but if they are not financially apt – it will just be another mattress because they cannot afford to pay the electricity bills. Supplying a pre-packed grocery box consisting mini bag of rice, vermicelli, sauces, onions, sugar etc..  is commendable but if the family does not know how to prepare a simple meal – the purpose is defeated.

See?

Every problem has a customized solution. While there can be a temporary blanket measure, the root of the problem has to be investigated and solved accordingly. Until then, whenever you wish to sedekah, take a minute to just ask yourself if the receiving end would benefit from it.If it does, GIVE. InsyaAllah, your deeds will be rewarded.

Sometimes I forget that I’m a MOM…

.. which is daunting because having the MOTHER title is a huge responsibility.

When I was young, I was fed with the universal idea that “Syurga di bawah telapak kaki ibu”. That it would be a big sin to go against the words and wills of a mother. Mulut mak masin. Meaning that whatever our mothers say – things tend to come true. So as children we become wary of these special powers a mom has.

And now I am a MOM. And sometimes I forget that now I am important to my kids. That my words and du’a , InsyaAllah will count and come true. Eventhough I still have girlish screams when I watch a chick flick or grin foolishly if Syafiq Kyle was to suddenly stop by at my clinic for a consultation for his fever. Gitew.

I have to actively remind myself to say good things about my children. To wish happy things for them. To be careful of my words for they are all prayers to Allah. Sabar (patience) needs to be a virtue so I will not have a slip of tongue and say ‘bodoh’, ‘babi’ or any vulgar connotations of that sort towards them.

I have to make a conscious feeling or intention everyday that I love my family. I am thankful for their presence and that I will try my best to keep this amanah. For I worry, if I say the wrong things my children would turn out to be what I pray for through my words – even if I do not mean it.

Let me tell you a story.

Once, there was a lady working at a hospital as a clinical staff, who had a child of which upon birth suffered from hypoxic brain injury. Subsequently, the child would occasionally have seizures but he managed to grow up as a young man in his late teens , with learning problems due to those medical conditions. His seizures are so bad at times that he requires multiple visits to Casualty only to be discharged later at his parents own risk.

One day, he had another seizure. He must have ruffled a few feathers with his mom, the clinical staff, earlier that day because when she knew he was in Casualty – she vent out loud probably due to exhaustion or desperation – “another fit? Gosh.. can’t you just let me breath once in a while?”. Then, she used this one word which she probably regret even thinking about it later on – The exact word was ‘menyusahkan’. [burden]

Anyway, the teen was observed at Casualty and since the parents requested a discharge at own risk – he was allowed home with advice. His mother continued with her work while her husband brought the teen back home. After all, this was just another one of those seizure episodes. However, a few hours later – the hospital received a frantic phone call from the father saying that the teen was unconscious in the house. An ambulance was dispatched to their residence. The teen unfortunately, was pronounced dead by the attending paramedic.

The mother? Who actually did not meant what she said.. as you can imagine.. was howling and crying uncontrollably. She did not mean for her son to be taken back by Allah and now she has all the time in the world ‘to breath’. And that her son is not her burden anymore. So powerful is the du’a of us Moms that if we are not careful with our tongue, badan akan binasa.

That will forever be one of the stories that taught me to always guard my tongue and use it for kind words, useful knowledge and good lessons. InsyaAllah..

Reading just became cool again. Thanks to our education minister, Dr Maszlee malik. Netizens are sharing what they’re reading, only that the choice of books are mostly the same. Within my circle that is. Maybe it is because we borrow books from one another. Ha ha ha.

Almost all my friends has Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist on their favourites list.  It would be interesting to see other mind-opening books you know. But yeah, those who love Mr Coelho’s book – ain’t he great?

Because of the hashtag, I have picked up my momentum in reading again. This time using the Google Playbook platform as well. It makes me look less like a nerd when I read on my phone. Friends would think I’m scrolling on Instagram when in fact I have my nose in a digital book like a modern Belle of Beauty and the Beast.

So if you’re an avid reader, a bookworm as your alter ego – do drop me a comment down below regarding good books I should read. It can be fiction, parenting books, skills book , management stuff, psychology things, history even.. or language related. As long as its a title that makes you feel awesome, happy or enlightened when you recommend them to me.

Share your good book title.

Hwanhee

I don’t understand Korean but my guess is audiences are supposed to vote as to who the real singer is. I came across this video because I was searching for HwanHee “Missing You” on youtube since the song was replaying itself in my head since dinner. I had thought it was sang by 2PM. I was wrong. Hwanhee and his duo buddy Brian, I think , were the original singers.

spoiler.

HwanHee is Singer No 3.

All 4 singers have almost the same tone and voice. But once the true star is revealed – I think we kinda get the picture why HwanHee became popular and not the other 3. When in fact, all of them have very good vocals. So what sets HwanHee apart from the rest of them?

What sets a specialist apart from a chronic Medical Officer with the same years of service? What sets a boss apart from his/her underlings? What sets you apart from copycat versions of yourself?

Good things need to come in a good package for it to stand out. It can be a little package but it has to be special. Hwanhee started off as a duo. He then took a leap of faith and did what most KPop stars opt to do – plastic surgery. A new hunky look combined with that million dollar voice – he was on the road to success. Hence, it takes more than just talent. Success begs for sacrifice, hard work, persistence, grit and that sprinkle of luck from the universe. The other 3 contestants too had a beautiful voice but perhaps it was the road they chose in the first place which affected the time for their debut which made all the difference. Perhaps it is just not their time yet. Who knows if we will see Singer No 1 shine in 4 years to come?

Similarly, it takes more than just good brains to study to become a specialist. One needs to have that XFactor. Perhaps the right time as well. Therefore, to each their own.

This video also taught me that everyone has a competitor. And is replaceable.  If for instance Hwanhee decides to be lazy and not work hard, it would not be impossible for Singer No 1 to fill in his shoes and take on the center stage. Singer No 1 could always work on the persona later but the voice is replaceable. So do not be comfortable. Too complacent with your existence if now you are at the top. Keep working hard. Keep inspiring. Keep improving. Keep being you.

Or one day you will be a relic. An antic. Old fashioned or part of ‘orang lama’.
